On Coarse For Disaster

On my coarse fishing trips its usually quite uneventful but just recently since my best mate Drew started coming out with me my fishing trips I've been having a few more accidents and slip ups, doubt its to do with my mate but you never know lol,

Anyway my last trip i'd set off out at 6:30am to get to where me and my buddy had organised to meet, turned onto the car park at 6:40am, started to unload my tackle and set off to find a good swim, about 300 yards down the towpath from my car i came across 2 swans walking their cygnets on the bank, i presumed that they would let me by without a problem, how wrong was I the biggest swan of the 2 raised its wings and hissed at me, i started to hurry past them and looked back to find it hot on my heels so i ran with around 35kg of tackle in my arms and shoulder with this vicious bird chasing after me, luckily for me it stopped after 30ft, i stopped and rubbed my side from the tackle box grinding my insides up and then rubbed my backside from the pecks of the swan, i finally made a move and setup my tackle further down from the swans.

I'd been setup around half hour before Drew turned up and set himself up about 10 ft away from me we'd nattered and fished for a while, my mobile rang and i stood up to get it out of my pants, it was the wife ringing to say good morning, i sat back down on my box and tipped the box backwards sending myself, groundbait, maggots and mobile phone flying, Drew was in fits of laughter and i could hear my mrs laughing down the phone, i picked myself up and gingerly rubbed my already sore backside, picking my phone up i asked the mrs to ring me back later so i could sort my tubs out, I picked my maggots up, sorted my groundbait out and sat back down and carried on fishing.

I thought my troubles were over and they were till just before dinner, i bring along my camp stove on my fishing trips to make brews and breakfast and dinner, i'd bought some thick sausages for my dinner and started to cook them on the stove, i was preoccupied with my float disappearing every couple of seconds with line bites and skimmers playing with my maggot, i did not see the big alsatian sniffing around my frying pan, i heard his owner shouting at the dog, i looked round to see an empty frying pan and a very happy alsatian finishing the last of my sausages, his owner could not apologise enough, i laughed and accepted the fate of my lovely sausages and pulled out a pot noodle which i was going to have for my tea and decided that it would probably be best to make something less appealing to dogs in the future.

Luckily the bad luck streak ended there and my fortunes change for the better and i bagged a good number of skimmer roach and perch before i headed home to have tea

Padiham Angling Center

I dont usually recommend just one tackle shop, as every one has a different style and approach to dealing with their customers but one in particular has really made an impact on me, Padiham Angling Center in Padiham Lancashire, the owner Steve is a top notch bloke always willing to talk and get to know his customers, if he does not have something in stock he'll do his hardest to get it in for you asap, his bait is second to none, his maggots for example are really fat and healthy, I've not failed to catch with them.

They cater for every aspect of angling from fly fishing to sea fishing, I've always found exactly what i need when i go in and am always eager to look at his new stock (like a kid in a toy store)

If you live in east lancashire or come over for a fish in one of our numerous lakes rivers and canals then pop in and pick some gear up you wont be disappointed

Mail Order Fishing Tackle

I don't usually recommend mail order companies as there are so many out there but 1 stood out among the rest, I'd been browsing their catalog and placing things in my basket, the catalog itself was vast with plenty to browse through i was quite surprised at the prices being so cheap and the items in question were decent makes eg Storm, Berkley etc so i had no worries there,  i'd gone to pay and had a problem on my end with my credit card so i decided to ring them up, i spoke to the owner who to be honest was absolutley brilliant he sorted it all out on his end and told me it was being shipped out shortly as it had already been picked and packed ready, he spoke to me like i was his brother, now that made me really happy as theres not many mail order companys out there who will take their time to speak to their customers and ask what they want not just pay pack and send without ever speaking to the customer, but this company is different they take their time to know the customer and help them out as much as possible

out of 10 i would give them 10/10 for service, smiles and speed they are a good company and well worth having a look

Northern Pike

The freshwater shark or croc as a lot of people like to call the pike, is one of my favorite fish to catch, its a streamlined stealthy predator with a big appetite, the British record currently stands at 46lb 13oz which was caught by R Lewis in Llandegfedd, Wales, in 1992. there has been some close calls with this record the most recent was on the 29th of March 2012 by Andy O'Connor at exactly 46lb caught at a fishery near Scarborough

This pike has been the largest one caught in a long while and hopefully there are bigger ones out there maybe the one in the picture above may end up being the record in a few years.


Pike can be landed either using plugs spinners and shads or dead/live baiting. most pike prefer weedbeds or sunken snags to lie in wait for their next meal, but do occasionally move to bask near the surface, i love stalking the reeds and weed beds looking for pike lying in wait, i could spend hours hunting for pike as they are a beautiful sleek predator and give a good fight,
this is one of my catches 

yes its not huge but at 6lb its a decent fish for a canal, my local canal has plenty of jack pike and a few decent sized pike but i've yet to find a decent double figured pike in that canal

The Leeds and Liverpool Canal

I've decided to post about my local water which has not really been publicized much in the angling media, I find that the Leeds and Liverpool canal has not been given the credit it deserves, it is a brilliant canal to fish, especially for pike, perch, roach, rudd and bream, in fairness some sections of the canal is strewn with rubbish and not really been cared for by British Waterways but there are miles and miles of beauty and wonder which have literally been untouched by human hands and it is an awesome sight to see.


One of these little gems is the section at Hapton Lancashire, its a beautiful spot which runs alongside the M65, don't let the thought of the motorway put you off fishing there though, once you've been fishing there for a while, you start to switch off from the noise this is one section of Hapton that i love to fish in the image below

This is only a portion of the beauty of these sections if you walk further you may find even more secret spots as i like to find.

There is a brilliant selection of decent fish in the canal which is another thing which has not been noted by the angling media
I've done research and found out  recorded weights of fish caught from this canal from fellow anglers on the canal

As you can see this canal is producing some really good fish, and will probably carry on doing so, there could even be a british record in that water and i'm 100% sure that will happen sometime in the next year or so.

My Favorite Shad

I know a lot of people have reverted to using Jelly or Rubber lures to catch their chosen predator, due to their lifelike looks and swimming action, I've tried tonnes of different ones from large lifelike roach, perch and trout to the jelly worms which wiggle and jiggle through the water, i have many personal faves but the ones which do stand out for me and work a treat are the Shakespeare Shad Selection

These colorful single hooked shads are absolutley brilliant me and my brother swear by these and catch plenty of pike, the single hook makes for more sport as you have to be that slight more careful in landing the fish as they can slip the hook easier than using treble hooks but are a damn sight easier to unhook than a treble hook, i have lost a few decent pike using these but the thrill of having to alter your play style is a lot more fun in my opinion

In all fairness these pictures are all small jacks all below 3lb but my brother has caught an 8lb pike from our local canal with these shad so they are worth a go and a pack of 5 for under £4 is worth the money, again you can find these lures in most tackle shops or go straight to the manufacturer here shakespeare tackle shop

My Favorite Plug

At the moment my favorite lure has to be the Tormentor from the Abu Garcia range, I've not had any brilliantly huge pike from it yet but i have had quite a number of small jacks with good success
